Is it safe to use onions for hair care?

Onions are not the most popular vegetables out there. We usually like to serve them in our dishes and, more often, in our salads, but the mere thought of them makes us squint. That is because the strong natural chemicals released upon cutting the onion irritate our eyes and make us ‘cry’.

Other than this, there are no other strong contraindications. It is, however, recommended to avoid external and internal use of onions if you are allergic to them. Also, if you have sensitive skin, it is probably safe to leave onion-based home remedies on for only half an hour. Overnight onion-juice treatments may irritate the skin and lead to unwanted results.

Now that we dealt with the safety measures, let's move on to see what benefits onion juice has for our hair and scalp and if it can help boost natural hair growth.

Onion juice for alopecia

As much as we hate the irritating chemical, scientifically called syn-Propanethial-S-oxide, it is the main reason why onions can stimulate hair growth. Several experiments have tested this hypothesis, and they all concluded that onions and onion juice, particularly, can perform wonders against alopecia.

The first test was conducted in 2014, when 38 participants were asked to apply onion juice on their scalp twice a week. The first group received real onion juice, whereas the second group was given tap water. The results were obvious. There was visible hair growth in 86 percent of participants from the first group after six weeks. Only 13 percent of respondents experienced hair growth in the tap-water group.

Further research conducted in 2018 confirmed the findings on benefits of onion juice for hair of the first experiment. When applied to the scalp, the onion juice stimulates blood circulation, which, in turn, helps hair growth, even within alopecia patches. By increasing blood circulation, onion juice also helps with hair length, the test showed.

Onion juice as a treatment for greying hair

Although grey is the color of 2021, and we've often seen it in fashion shows, most of us would like to cover grey hair or, at least, prevent it. As it turns out, we can once again rely on onion juice to prevent premature greying of hair.

As chemistry proved, grey hair is the result of hydrogen peroxide buildup. Young adults have dark or colored hair because their body produces larger amounts of catalase, an antioxidant that can separate hydrogen from peroxide and block hair discoloration. Onions contain large amounts of catalase; therefore, they are one of the most efficient natural remedies against grey hair.

While onion juice cannot reverse grey hair, it is effective for premature grey hair prevention and can definitely help restore some of its natural color by creating a barrier against hydrogen peroxide buildup. What's more, you can use onion juice to also help increase natural hair shine and hair growth and strength by simply applying it to the scalp and hair several times a week.

Onion juice for dandruff and itchy scalp symptoms

One of the most dreadful scalp problems is dandruff. There are multiple causes for dandruff, and medical experts can help identify them. When it is not stress-related, dandruff is usually associated with a fungus called Malassezia, and it can be easily treated with onion juice. Onions have great anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties, which is why you should consider them as a natural remedy when you notice dandruff flakes on your scalp.

Depending on the hair problems you may be facing, whether it's hair fall, premature grey hair or dandruff, there are multiple ways to incorporate onion juice into your hair care routine.

If you want to stimulate hair follicle growth, strengthen the hair follicles and reduce hair loss, you may want to use onion juice on its own or combine it with several other blood circulation stimulants, such as nettle leaf extract. Mix half part onion juice and half part nettle leaf extract. Rub the mixture on your scalpf and leave it in for 10 to 15 minutes. If your scalp is sensitive, you may reduce the time to just 5 minutes to prevent scalp irritation. Wash and rinse your hair as you normally do. For increased results, add 10-20 drops of onion juice to your shampoo and conditioner.

A similar mixture can be used to prevent premature grey hair. If you don't want to add too many products to your hair and scalp, you can simply chop or blend an onion and apply it to your hair roots. For faster results, it is recommended that you mix 3 parts onion juice with 2 parts lemon juice and 2 parts coconut oil. This combination is ideal because the catalase antioxidant and the coconut oil protect the hair's natural color, whereas the lemon juice boosts the hair shine.

Onion juice-based shampoos and conditioners are now accessible on the market for those who prefer a natural remedy without putting in too much effort or time to prepare it. In addition, these mild products will reduce the onion smell that might linger after the use of a homemade mask while providing all the benefits of onion juice for hair.
