Body scrubs are one of those magical self-care and skincare products I discovered all on my own. Call it a woman’s intuition entering my awareness early, or perhaps I read about it in a teen magazine, but I fell deeply for body scrub at a very young age and never looked back. 

Of course, when I was younger and much less health-conscious, I bought any old body scrub at the drug store and reveled in its scraping and scrubbing at my skin, feeling oh so shiny and clean when I emerged from the hot shower. 

But as I grew older, my skin grew more sensitive, and I had to seek out all-natural products that agreed with my specific skin. What I have found over the years is that physical exfoliants work best for me and that truly the best body scrub for sensitive skin is one that is all-natural, plant-based, and agrees with all five of your senses.

Make sure your cleanser is all-natural, plant-based, and gentle for your skin. Excessive washing with a harsh cleanser will dry out your skin and scrubbing twice a day (yes, you must wash your face twice a day), with chemicals can do more bad than good. 

Exfoliate

As mentioned above, exfoliating your skin twice a week will help get rid of excess oil and dirt as well as unclog your pores. Choose a physical exfoliant and take care not to scrub too hard. 

Moisturize and Hydrate!

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. The common wisdom says 8 glasses, but I also count herbal teas and kombucha toward my water intake. As long as it does not have caffeine, you can count it as hydration. And be sure to moisturize after every wash. 

If you include a moisturizer with SPF you get bonus points for protecting your skin. I love coconut oil because it acts as a natural sunscreen, and it is super hydrating.

Watch Your Mouth

A healthy diet will go a long way toward great skin. And anyone who has fallen out of practice with their plant-rich diet will attest to this truth. You notice almost instantly that your skin takes on a grayish pallor and thinner skin. 

So watch what you put in your mouth. That advice goes for smoking as well, one of the leading causes of premature aging of the skin. 

Hit the Snooze Button

Sleep is an essential ingredient for good skin. I say hit the snooze button, but the truth is you are better off turning in early each night so you don’t have to hit that snooze button and wake up grudgingly. They call it beauty sleep for a reason, you know?
