If it's the latest season of The Bold Type keeping you up or perhaps long work from home days sneaking their way into your sleep schedule, or maybe you're just overwhelmed by the changing world, whatever the reason for your languidness, I've got some natural remedies that will undoubtedly help.
As much as I wished I were a cool, broom flying witch - I am not! Thank heaven essential oils are nothing but magic in a bottle. I’ve been using essential oils to wake up and as instant energy boosters on days I'm feeling off for a couple of years now, and I'm going to list down 3 of my favorite Essential Oils that work like nothing but magic in more ways than one. Before I do that, let me break it down for the folks wandering beauty & wellness lanes for the first time & wondering what Essential Oils essentially are.
What Are Essential Oils?
To put it as casually as I can, Essential Oils are the goodness of plants juiced in a concentrated volatile oil. Besides Volatile Oils, Essential Oils are also often referred to as Ethereal Oils and are popularly used in aromatherapy and by athletes for instant pain relief and muscle relaxation.
Common Benefits of Essential Oils
- Essential Oils are sometimes used as antibiotics in topical traditional remedies and treatments.
- Help relieve stress and anxiety. It is also reccomended to use essential oils to help calm people with ADHD and autism.
- To help with sleep disorders.
- Popular for boosting energy.
Now that we’ve got the basics down, it’s time to spill the beans on my top favorites. As an ex-member of the ‘no-sleep, low energy, full anxiety’ tribe, you can take my word for these, and also extensive research papers by various reliable sources easily found on the good old web will confirm the same.
Essential Oils To Wake Up Instantly
1. Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil has been used since time immemorial in medicine, beauty, and culinary art for its various benefits. It's fresh, it's green, and it boasts of unbeatable benefits like muscle relaxation, better ventilation, and a decrease in blood lactate levels - don't believe me? Trust the experts. It is an instant energy booster and even works for Monday blues.
How to use peppermint oil:
Like with most essential oils, you can include it in your morning routine, even if it simply means adding a couple of drops to your moisturizer. Or use an oil blend with peppermint oil to massage the back of your neck. Alternatively, of course, you can diffuse it.
2. Citrus Essential Oils

There's no doubt about the extremely rejuvenating superpowers that citrus fruits and plants hold. Lemonade exists for a reason! However, it's not always that a cold glass of lemonade or orange juice can wake your soul up, especially from a state of lethargy, despair, and, all in all, a dull life-sized dramedy.
Occasionally, you need something more volatile, which works like a punch in the face but feels like a swim in the clouds! Enter Sweet Orange and Lemon Essential Oils, two of the most popular and commonly used citrus essential oils besides grapefruit.

In addition to being extremely refreshing, citrus oils come with a plethora of benefits like stress reduction, mood upliftment, skin lightening, and hair health improvement, to name a few.
How to use lemon essential oil:
Simply diffuse 1-2 drops and inhale the refreshing aroma. Because this citrus oil causes photosensitivity, it is not a good idea to apply it topically in the morning, so you should only be using essential oils such as lemon and bergamot in the evening.
3. Camphor Essential Oil
Camphor Oil has a veteran place in ancient Indian and Chinese medicine due to its rich anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Camphor helps relieve cough, congestion, and other flu-like symptoms, including headaches. It easily absorbs into the skin and is extensively used in modern medication, beauty & grooming essentials too. It revitalizes the body, mind & soul. Its strong fragrance kicks you out of a boring rut.
When used in a blended formula of essential oils with citrus and peppermint or eucalyptus oil - its soothing, healing & rejuvenating properties are twofold.
How to use camphor essential oil:
You can either use it as a massaging oil, blended with peppermint and/or eucalyptus and properly diluter in a carrier oil, or use it in a diffuser to create a stimulating environment in your room or working space.
Besides these three oils, you can also try the energy-boosting and mind-invigorating essential oil blends by WOW:
WOW Energizer – a formula of 7 essential oils with a minty-citrusy fragrance and hints of camphor, that help remove lethargy and mental dullness.

WOW Revitalize – a blend of 6 essential oils that will give you fresh shots of mental energy and help you regain your mojo.

Before we conclude, there’s a tiny bit of information that will help you a long way - especially if you're planning to use a diffuser. Chances are, you're probably already wondering…
How Many Drops To Put In A Diffuser?
A standard diffuser can hold up to 100 ml of water, to which it is recommended to add 3 to 4 drops of oil. However, this depends on the size of your room and your personal preference. If you're a first-time user, I recommend you start small and increase the amount of oil gradually (I learned this the hard way - post-trial, error & almost giving myself a migraine). Let's not forget, when we use essential oils, that they are highly concentrated, and only a few drops are enough to establish a calming & fresh atmosphere in the room. Remember, less is more!
Now that you know what the best essential oils to wake up are, why not try some essential oil therapy yourself. I bet these would help you a lot! Just remember to be patient and trust the process, more so if you’re a complete alien to how essential oils work and how they should be used. A little bit of research, in general, would help you a great deal in dismissing any doubts or apprehensions that you may have.
Don't diss it before you try it!
