What Causes Hair Breakage on Top of the Head?

Hair breakage on top of the head is a result of a combination of poor hair care and environmental damage.

We will delve deeper into how you can prevent or treat it later, but for now, let's focus on the causes of this issue.

What Causes Hair Breakage on Top of the Head?

Brushing Hard

Often the hair closer to the scalp is coarser than the rest of your hair. To style it, you may be brushing or tugging at it too hard.

No matter how coarse it seems, it is also weaker and first to break. Or, if you brush your hair when it is still wet since your hair is more fragile, it breaks very easily.

Environmental Damage

Your hair takes the worst hit when it comes to environmental damage—the Sun, wind, rain, pollution, and everything else out there. Constant exposure makes your hair more porous and hence more prone to breakage.

Plus, the UVA and UVB rays of the Sun have extremely damaging effects and can permanently modify the components of the hair fiber.

If you do not wear a hat when exposed to the Sun, it leads to chemical and irreversible changes in your hair.

Hair Accessories

The crown area is where to place your hair clips and tie your ponytails. Many times, when you untie your hair, you may observe that a lot of hair gets caught in the rubber band and leads to breakage.

Heat Styling Tools

You probably know that heat styling tools aren't necessarily good for your hair.

Sure, they make your hair look good for a few days, but that's about it.

Even worse, though, is if you do not use the correct technique of using these tools. Or, if you use them at maximum temperatures, they are likely to cause more damage.

Since the top of the head is where you start styling it, it takes the worst hit.

Hair Chemicals

When you treat your hair with bleach or other chemicals, especially without using protectants, it enhances the chances of breakage.

Using protectants can help minimize hair damage and tolerate the chemical process better.

How to Prevent Hair Breakage at the Top of the Head?

To prevent further hair breakage, you need to pay more attention to the products and accessories you use.

Read below to find out more.

Select the Right Accessories

Avoid using hair accessories that produce tension on your scalp. This does not mean that you should stop making ponytails altogether.

ponytail

For ponytails, choose a silk or satin scrunchie as they will prevent possible breakage. And, even though a satin scrunchie is gentle on your hair, still make sure you don't tie it too tight as that puts pressure on your scalp and causes breakage.

Go for soft headbands that look stylish and do not cause damage to your hair. Alternatively, you can use claw clips that look cute and secure your hair in one place.

Use Heat Styling Tools Correctly

If you simply cannot imagine your life without your favorite hair straightener or curler, make sure to at least use it at medium or low temperatures instead of maximum temperatures.

This will at least help in reducing the damage, if not entirely prevent it. Also, ensure that you minimize the use of tools to only once or twice a week and never without a heat protectant.

Oil Massage

Nourishing your hair from the roots makes all the difference in the world. It promotes blood circulation to the scalp, which improves hair growth. Make sure to give a good scalp massage to yourself at least once a week.

To regrow the hair at the crown, you need to take extra care of your hair. Make sure to always keep your hair moisturized.

Otherwise, it will keep breaking as it grows back. Also, whenever you use a hair product, always be extra gentle.

Simply using the right accessories and being gentle whenever handling your hair can save it from looking all damaged and lifeless.
