Akhila Jerripothula

Do you know to look for good ingredients for hair when choosing your hair products? The right conditioner may be the answer to nourish dry, dull, frizzy hair.

No hair journey is complete without a proper balance of products. Using the right conditioner may be the answer you’re looking for to nourish dry, dull, frizzy hair. However, this is only true if you use the right one! A lot of people assume that they can just go out and get any random conditioner they see on the shelf and have great results. This definitely isn’t the case.

In order to get the most out of your conditioner, you need to find one that works for your hair type and hair goals. This will give you an idea of what active ingredients to look for in your product to get the best results. Here’s everything you need to know about hair conditioning ingredients and choosing good ingredients for hair so you can find the best product for you.

Coconut Milk

A fabulous ingredient for a conditioner is coconut milk. Coconut milk, one of the best natural ingredients for hair, can be really beneficial to your hair as it contains lauric acid, protein, and vitamins like C, E, and various B vitamins. Lauric acid and proteins help to penetrate your strands and strengthen from the inside. Antioxidant-rich vitamins C, E, and B3 help fight free radicals to protect your hair from environmental damage. You can find this amazing conditioner in WOW Skin Science’s Coconut Milk Hair Conditioner to promote hair that looks fuller, healthier, and shinier!

Moroccan Argan Oil

A popular hydrating ingredient, and another one of the best natural ingredients for hair, is as exotic as it sounds - Moroccan Argan Oil. This incredibly rare ingredient, perfect for dry hair, has been used for centuries. Argan oil consists of high concentrations of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E. This translates into hair that is frizz-free, shiny, and bouncy. It can even help protect your hair from heat damage! WOW Skin Science’s Moroccan Argan Oil Hair Conditioner boasts this key ingredient, along with the best natural actives without gluten, sulfates, and parabens.

Shea Butter

If you have natural hair texture or coarse hair, then shea butter is an amazing natural ingredient for your conditioner. Shea butter is known for its hydrating properties since it is rich in fatty acids, and vitamins A and E. Some of these components are emollients, meaning they have a softening effect on your hair. Obviously, that’s what conditioner is supposed to do! But shea butter really packs a punch and is able to help with hair breakage, add moisture, reduce dryness, seal split ends, increase shine, reduce frizz, and even soothe scalp irritation

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a popular hair fall home remedy that adds a boost of hydration in your conditioner. It is a great source of ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid with soothing properties to support the healthy growth of hair follicles and help fight hair loss. This is a key ingredient if you are looking to heal damaged hair, and works great on its own as a nourishing hair oil, like the one from WOW Skin Science.

Olive Oil

Indeed, the same olive oil in your kitchen pantry for cooking all sorts of delicious foods makes for a great ingredient for your conditioner! Olive Oil contains soothing vitamin E that is able to protect and strengthen your hair to help promote hair strength and healthy hair growth. It also increases blood circulation that can soothe a red, itchy, irritated scalp.

Jojoba Oil

Finally, we have jojoba oil that contains vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin E, B vitamins, copper, and zinc. These properties work to protect your hair against dryness, breakage, and pesky split ends. This leads to stronger hair by promoting healthy hair growth and nourishing the dryness left from your shampoo. The soothing nourishment can help

Ingredients to Avoid

Now that you know what ingredients to look for, here are the ingredients to stay away from in your hair conditioner:

  • Silicone: This slick ingredient isn’t necessarily harmful to your health, but it’s not really the best thing for your hair. Despite the fact that silicones are used to keep hair hydrated, smooth, and slick -- it can also have some negative effects. First of all, it can prevent other hydrating ingredients from being able to fully penetrate your hair and properly moisturize your strands. Secondly, silicone is not a water-soluble substance which means that it can easily lead to product build-up, which can weigh down curly hair. The good news is that you can achieve silk smooth hair without the use of silicones by using some of the natural conditioning ingredients listed above!
  • Polyethylene Glycol: Polyethylene glycol, or PEG, is a petroleum-based compound that functions as an emollient in order to soften and lubricate the hair or skin. The first component, polyethylene, is actually the most common form of plastic. Do you really want to be putting plastic-like substances in your hair? Probably not. Not only that, but PEGs are even classified as a “developmental toxicant” in the state of California due to its connection to dioxane, which is a known carcinogen that can affect the liver and kidneys. Clearly, this is one ingredient to avoid in any conditioner!
  • SLS and SLES: Otherwise known as sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium Laureth sulfate, these are two chemicals that you want to avoid in your conditioner, and all your personal care products. Like PEGs, sulfates like SLS and SLES contain the known carcinogen dioxane. They are really harsh and can easily irritate your skin and scalp -- especially if you are more sensitive to strong chemicals.
  • Parabens: Some of the commonly-found parabens in conditioner products include methylparaben and propylparaben since they can help promote hair growth. However, parabens are known as xenoestrogens, which means they can negatively affect your body’s natural production of hormones. When you have too much estrogen in your body, it can increase the likelihood of breast cell division and the growth of tumors that can go on to cause breast cancer and other reproductive issues.

***

The good news is that you don’t have to use any of these undesirable ingredients in your conditioner to get soft, silky, and smooth hair. Using natural ingredients isn’t just safer -- but it actually turns out better for your hair!

So before you reach for a random drugstore conditioner that seems to have none of the beneficial natural ingredients yet all of the sketchy chemicals, check out WOW Skin Science’s safe, healthy, and natural hair products instead.
