How to Heal Cracked Heels - Tips for Deep and Lasting Relief

3 mins

Nora Simion

Sometimes applying nourishing cream is not enough for deep cracks. Read to find out how to heal deep cracked heels using only natural treatments.

Cracked heels are not just unaesthetic, they are a medical condition, and their state can worsen without proper treatment.

Most people prevent and treat cracked heels because they look bad. Yet, if left untreated, cracks can bleed and become infectious.

The yellow callouses around the cracks can become painful, so it is important to treat them while they are only superficial.

Causes of Deep Cracked Heels - Understanding the Root of the Problem

There are many causes for cracked heels. Rough external conditions, such as hot or cold weather and harsh cleaning products, are the first factors for cracked heels.

Usually, wearing sandals in the summertime is a safe recipe to get the cracks because the heels are constantly slapped by the hard soles of the sandals. Add dirt, sweat, and constant friction, and the fissures are complete.

There are other possible causes for deep cracked heels. People with weight problems are more prone to get fissures because their body weight exerts constant pressure on the heels. Standing up for extended periods is another cause of cracked heels, especially wearing uncomfortable footwear.

Women are more likely to develop heel fissures because they expose their feet more often than men, especially in summer. Sometimes, we also prioritize looks over health by choosing high heels or uncomfortable shoes instead of sneakers.

Even though we tend to forget this, our feet are sensitive, and they require extra care. The best solution is to give them a double dose of pampering after a rough day. Here is the 5-step guide for a complete feet routine.

5 Steps to Heal Deep Cracked Heels - Your Comprehensive Guide to Foot Care

Deep cracked heels can develop into a serious medical condition. It is important to keep the feet clean and moisturized at all times to minimize any risks.

Here are the steps you need to follow to soothe the skin on your heels.

Use a gentle body cleanser

Fissures can retain dirt and become infected. Feet must be, therefore, long soaked in lukewarm water to moist the callouses.

Gently wash the skin of the sole with a natural body wash and rinse the area. The more natural the product, the better, as you won’t have to rinse your feet for a long period of time.

Exfoliate the skin

Pumices are great for removing callouses when the skin is soaked. Do not exaggerate and use light strokes to exfoliate.

If you don’t like pumices, you can rub an Ubtan body scrub on the callouses for a couple of minutes and then wash it off.

Even though the dead skin cells have been removed, the skin is still moisturized thanks to the Ayurvedic body scrub, which nourishes the skin.

Add moisturizer

Dry skin requires tons of moisturizer, especially if we are dealing with deep cracked heels. Choosing the right product will solve 90% of your problems, so focus on this before anything else.

There are two types of moisturizers: body lotions and body butters

Body lotions have a light composition, which means they are great for regular feet care, but not necessarily for deep cracked heels.

Body butter might be better for deep cracked heels because it remains longer on the skin and offers a better protection barrier.

Whether it is cocoa butter, olive, or argan oil butter, make sure the product is 100% organic. You don’t want the cracked skin of the heels, already sensitive as it is, to come in contact with rough agents.

Massage as often as you can

We’ve seen that body pressure is one of the main causes of fissures. To restore blood circulation in soles you must massage them at the end of the day for 5-10 minutes.

You can either massage with your bare hands or gently press your feet on a massage brush.

Wear cotton socks

You probably heard this before: natural clothing helps the skin stay moisturized.

Using soft cotton socks will heal deep cracked heels faster because the heat will open pores more and allow the body butter to set within the fissure.

Soft cotton socks do not irritate the callouses so that the skin can recover.

How to Fix Cracked Heels Permanently - Recommended Products and Home Remedies

If you want a more efficient and natural remedy, you can opt for DIY feet masks. These are great moisturizers, and they are based on a harmonious mix between antioxidants and essential oils.

My all-time favorite is a mix of essential oils with strong disinfectant properties and a few drops of lemon juice.

Eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and castor oil have antifungal properties, making them great fissure treatments. Lemon juice is a rich source of vitamin C; it helps clean the fissure and rejuvenate the skin.

You can leave this treatment on for 15 minutes and then rinse the feet with warm water. If you use antifungal oils, you must finish the DIY treatment by applying a few drops of nourishing oils.

Coconut oil, argan oil, or olive oil are greasier than antifungal oils, and they offer long-lasting protection for the skin. You can even mix the three oils and massage them into the skin of the soles.

On our quest to find out how to heal deep cracked heels, we have discovered that having a consistent feet care routine is, in fact, the solution.

Cleaning the deep cracks and scrubbing the calloused skin is essential to prevent infections. After removing the dirt, we must help the skin of the soles recover by applying a nourishing body butter layer.

If you want to pamper your feet further, you may also incorporate an additional step: a DIY essential oil feet mask.
