5 Ways to Choose the Best Shampoo for Frizzy Hair

3 mins

Shanna Mendez

The best shampoo and conditioner for thick frizzy hair are almost impossible to find. Here are 5 ways to choose them.

I have fine, wavy hair - a lot of it. My hair holds style well, and it is hard to define. My stylist once said, “your hair is so weird.

It’s kinda wavy on top but board straight on the bottom.” Yes. It is weird.

The top half of my head grows different hair from the bottom half of my head. I do deal with frizz, but it is pretty rare. I usually use a bit of a relaxing cream after the shower to keep it under control.

I never had to worry about haircare until my husband, and then my daughter came into my life. My hubby has a full-blown afro, and my daughter got his thick curly hair that can get frizzy when it dries out.

Now, because my hair is so easy to deal with, and my younger daughter’s is as well, we buy products that work for my husband and younger daughter, and the rest of us just go with it.

It has been a trial, but we have finally found the best shampoo and conditioner for thick and frizzy hair, and I have included all the tips we have discovered here.

Who Has Thick Frizzy Hair?

65% of the US population has what can be described as thick and frizzy hair. Of course, variations on this description exist.

My daughter’s hair is thicker than my husband’s, and my husband’s hair is curlier than my daughter's.

The bottom line is anyone with a coarser, kinkier hair shaft often deals with the frizz that comes with this drier texture. It is not enough to simply wash, condition, dry, and brush.

I have a girlfriend with super tight curls, and she explains, as the only one in her family with her hair type, how she spent almost her entire young life figuring out how to manage her hair.

Simply brushing it out can result in a cloud of frizz around your face.

It is really a matter of choosing the right products and then the appropriate styling tools as well as cuts and styles to enhance your natural beauty. Often, we begin with shampoo and conditioner.

5 Ways to Choose the Best Shampoo and Conditioner for Thick and Frizzy Hair

1. Look for Oil Bases

Thick and frizzy hair tends to dry out quickly, so you want to seek out shampoo and conditioner with oil as the base. Coconut oil, avocado oil, black seed oil, and olive oil are all great for thick frizzy hair. They will help weigh your hair down and support a dry scalp as well, so you do not end up itching and getting dandruff.

2. Avoid Volumizers

Volumizers dry hair out by definition. They lighten the weight of your hair so it will lift. This process dries out your hair, which is a nightmare for thick frizzy hair. You do not need more volume. Often, what you are looking for is less!

3. Avoid Sulfates

Sulfates come in a ton of drug store shampoos, even the expensive ones. Sulfates are chemical cleaners that create the lather when you wash. They are often harsh and drying, so you want to avoid them at all costs.

4. Moisturizing Is Best

The more moisture, the better. I love shampoos and conditioners for my family that have combinations of oils and creams. They provide support for dry hair and dry scalps, and they encourage our natural oils to flourish. Also, watch for shampoos that are drying but come with moisturizing conditioners. They undo each other. Stick with moisturizers for thick and frizzy hair.

5. Stick to Plant-Based

Always look for all-natural, plant-based, cruelty-free products when buying shampoo and conditioner (and anything else, really). You will not only be supporting products and companies that commit to ethics and the environment, but you will also be doing what is healthiest for your hair. Any added chemicals can have a deleterious effect on your thick frizzy hair, adding to the dryness you are trying to avoid.

Additional Tips for Dealing with Thick Frizzy Hair

For extra support, look to styling products that add moisture to your scalp and locks. Whether you run a bit of coconut oil through your strands after the shower or invest in hair oil, keep hydration in mind when it comes to your hair.

Remember to only wash hair once or twice a week to lock in natural oils. Avoid using a hairdryer if you can. And do not apply any drying products like mousse or spray with chemical agents.

Finally, think about an overnight treatment that includes oiling your scalp and wrapping your hair in a light kerchief, which will help your hair and scalp absorb and maintain moisture.

All the help you can give your hair to drink up hydrating products will pay off when you notice the bright shine you get throughout your day.
