What Are the Causes for Dry, Brittle Hair Falling Out?
Let us first understand the five main causes of dry, brittle hair.
Hair Products
According to a study performed in 2014, shampoos formulated at basic pH can make hair brittle and more prone to breakage.
This is because basic pH creates more friction between hair strands. Shampoos with an acidic pH may cause less frizz and hence be more suitable to improve hair health.
Other hair products such as bleaches, colors, perming products can also weaken the hair and make it more prone to becoming brittle.
Over-Brushing and Heat Damage
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, brushing the hair 100 strokes a day may lead to breakage.
Another culprit is all the tugging of the hair when styling it.

Heat styling tools such as blow-dryers, curling iron, and straighteners also damage the hair, especially if used frequently and without any protective products.
They damage the hair shaft and dry out the hair, thus making it brittle and more prone to breakage.
Improper Hair Care
Using a rough towel to dry your hair can increase frizz and cause breakage. Wet hair is already prone to breakage, so avoid rubbing the towel vigorously to dry your hair.
Instead, use a microfiber towel to gently rid your hair of all the excess water.
Also, avoid over-washing your hair as it will make it dry.
Medical Conditions
Medical conditions such as:
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Hypothyroidism
- Menkes syndrome, and
- Anorexia nervosa can also cause dry and brittle hair; along with other serious complications.
Lifestyle & Other Factors

Lifestyle factors such as a diet lacking omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, vitamin D, iron, zinc, etc., make the hair weak, dull, and brittle.
Stress, alcohol consumption, tight hairstyles that tug on the roots, not getting regular haircuts, all add to the hair damage.
Other factors include living in a hot climate, excessive sun exposure, and dry winter months.
How Can I Treat Dry, Brittle Hair?
You do not have to put up with unhealthy, frizzy, dry hair any longer. Read some of the most effective solutions below.
Switch Your Hair Care Routine
Switching your hair care routine is the first step towards damage control. It includes throwing away all hair products containing harsh chemicals like parabens and sulfates and opting for products that are meant to address hair concerns.
Most beneficial shampoos and conditioners contain moisturizing ingredients, antioxidants, proteins, etc., to help restore your hair health.
Also, keep in mind to never skip your conditioner. It is essential for good hair health as it reduces frizz, detangles hair, and retains the shine of your hair.

This floral duo gently cleanses your scalp, conditions it to restore the natural moisture barrier, and provides nourishment to smooth, strengthen, and fight hair fall.
Use a Pre-Shampoo Mask
Incorporating a pre-shampoo mask may seem like more work, but believe me when I say it is worth the extra effort!
A good pre-shampoo mask can add extra moisture to your dry locks. It can also make it easier to detangle your hair, make it softer, and boost the effectiveness of shampoo and conditioner that follow.
You can make a mask at home with ingredients like mashed banana and olive oil. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before you shampoo.
Avoid Over-washing
Washing your hair every day makes it extremely dry by stripping away the natural oils produced in the scalp.
Instead of doing that, wash your hair every 2 to 3 days.
Use Protective Hair Products
You can find a variety of protective hair products in the market, like heat and UV protectants.

Of course, you can lay off the heat for a while, but if that is not an option, you should make sure to use medium temperatures and only use it every few days.
How Can I Prevent My Hair Becoming Dry and Brittle
Once you get your hair back to its original health, it is essential to consistently take care of it and maintain it.
- An occasional break from using heat tools had to be my first point. There are plenty of heatless styling options available in the market nowadays.
- Switch your hairstyle to reduce tension on your scalp. Go for loose braids or low buns and other stylish hairstyles.
- Ensure that all your hair products are devoid of parabens, sulfates, silicones, alcohol, and other drying agents.
- Either do not brush wet hair or use a wet brush to gently detangle your hair.
- Hair masks all the way. A simple hair mask of yogurt, coconut milk, etc., will make your hair look and feel good all the time.

It is better to take care of your hair and prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. For that, I would like to recommend two of my favorite hair care products that will help you get your healthy, silky hair back in no time.
