I had been spending hundreds of dollars on skincare products for years. Hundreds. I invested in argan oil when it first hit the market. I bought all-natural makeup and sustainable moisturizers. I wanted to take excellent care of my skin and keep that youthful look, for which I had always been complimented.
People have always told me I look way younger than I am, and it has become a point of pride for me. I want to keep that up. But to be honest, after I had two kids, I had to start tightening up my budget. That is when I found coconut oil.
Once I researched and discovered the magic of this super simple easy to access oil, I was hooked for life. Now, I have been using a $5 jar of organic, extra virgin coconut oil for my skin both day and night, and I love it.
But enough about skincare, what does coconut oil do for your hair?

History of Coconut Oil - The Story Behind the Miracle Ingredient
For four thousand years, people have been using coconut oil for its edible and healing properties. Prevalent across any country in the southern hemisphere, it has been employed for healing virtually every part of the body, mind, and spirit across cultures. It was even used as a saline drip during World War II.
Every single part of the coconut has been used for a variety of purposes. The shell has been used as bowls or ground up as exfoliants. The flesh is consumed in meals across cultures and diets. The water is hydrating and contains natural electrolytes. And the oil has been both for food and for external skin prevention and healing purposes.
For decades, the western world has been fascinated by coconut oil in what we would consider exotic diets, but it has only been recently that we have begun to integrate coconut oil into our cooking.
Once we discovered that the fats released in coconut oil are highly beneficial, much more so than vegetable and canola oils, we were hooked. Now, you can find coconut oil on the shelves of pretty much any market in any town.
Coconut Oil for Hair Growth - The Top 5 Benefits You Should Know About

Longer and Thicker
Lots of oils and other products claim to help your hair grow longer and thicker, but the vitamins and fatty acids in coconut do it! Apply coconut oil as a pre-shampoo treatment once a week for about 10 minutes, and you’re doing yourself and your hair a huge favor.
Protect from Color Damage
One of my favorite things about coconut oil is its protective qualities. Add a bit of coconut oil to your hair and scalp before any major chemical treatment or bleach and you can lessen the damage done.
Frizz Control
A super-absorbent oil, coconut oil will build moisture right into your dry, frizzy hair and calm it down. My husband has a full-blown afro inherited from his father, and I have finally gotten him hooked on coconut oil. His latest hairstylist even commented on it: “Oh your curls love the coconut oil.”

Protect from Sun Damage
I put coconut oil on me and the kids when we head out for the day, both in our hair and on our skin. It has amazing SPF qualities that I prefer to most chemical sunscreens that have too many nasty side effects. Of course, we also must limit our time in the sun and seek out shade.
Detangler
Because of those same absorbent qualities, coconut oil makes a great detangler. I rub a small amount into my hands and run it through my girls’ hair after the shower for detangling. Their hair comes out shiny and smooth and tangle-free.
Alternate Uses for Coconut Oil in Your Life - From Cooking to Skincare
So much! Use coconut oil for everything. I add it to my coffee for fat burning. I sauté my veggies in it for flavor and low carcinogen effects. You can put it on toast or a bagel and even add it to tea. It is truly amazing.
It is great for your heart and your gut. It even has antimicrobial properties that kill the bad bacteria while leaving the good bacteria alone. It has even been shown to reduce Alzheimer’s!
On your skin, you can apply it directly as a moisturizer or sunscreen. It is also great for burns and small cuts and scrapes. I have my girls use it whenever they have a bite or a rash because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties.
You really should have a jar of coconut oil in every room of your house. And if you can invest in some products with coconut oil, how could you not?
