What Helps with Acne Scars? Top 5 Tips & Tricks

3 mins

Shanna Mendez

Acne scars can serve as a painful recollection of a difficult time of your life when your skin did not behave well. So, what helps with acne scars?

I have been beyond fortunate not to have suffered from acne scars. My husband has them, and many of my friends have them as well. I certainly had my fair share of acne, and I picked and prodded each pimple with the best of them. I suspect I escaped largely unscathed because of the creams and lotions I happen to have always used.

But it is sheer chance, I am sure, because I was not in the least concerned with potential scarring as I was digging in my skin. It does come down to genetics, knowledge, and access to medicine, and luck. And once the damage is done, figuring out what helps with acne scars can be just as tricky if you don't know where to look.

Acne scars can be awful to bear with, especially so many years after those raging hormone years. This article will guide you through an all-natural approach to putting those painful reminders behind you.

What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars are the result of digging at your skin when you have acne. From picking excessively and trying to get rid of pimples and their scars, you can create dips in your skin, which then develop into scars.

Over time, scars can get better or worse, depending on how you care for your skin during that time. Lack of sleep, stress, poor diet, and an unstable skincare routine can all make acne scars worse, more prominent, or at the very least not make them better.

If you suffer from acne scars, it may simply be that your skin is more sensitive and prone to scarring. As such, it will be essential for you to take extra care in the future if you have acne or any other skin condition that compels you to itch or pick at your skin. Don’t do it! Take precautions with preventative measures that can keep your skin even and clean, so you can avoid causing any more damage.

Top 5 Ingredients for What Helps with Acne Scars

Essential Oils

Essential oils are a wonder to work with. You can choose from among many healing and antibacterial oils like eucalyptus, tea tree, rosehip seed, coconut, almond, and lemongrass. As a bonus, most oils that work to repair scarring will also help prevent future scarring.

Shea Butter

Rich and luxurious, shea butter is packed with healing properties that many have claimed have helped heal and repair scars.

Aloe Vera

If you don’t already, keep an aloe vera plant on hand. The gel from the plant is one of the most effective healers around. Apply directly to acne scars, and over time, you should see solid results.

Raw Honey

Raw local honey holds myriad health benefits, not least among them the power to heal scars. All those antioxidants and antibacterial and antifungal properties will help repair the skin as well as prevent future damage.

Lemon Juice

People have been raving about lemon juice for lightening and healing scars for generations. It is thought that the citric acid in lemons, which is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid, will promote exfoliation and get rid of your dead skin cells, which will, over time, improve the appearance of scarring.

Be Good to Your Skin with Plants

You do have to experiment with the full range of plant medicine to see what all-natural approach works best for your skin. Since we are talking about scars that have likely been around for a while, you are in no huge rush, so take your time and play with different strategies and techniques.

The nice thing is, you are highly unlikely to cause any further damage by trying this or that plant-based approach. The worst thing that can happen is one approach does not work, and you move on to the next one.

Keep in mind that if an ingredient irritates your skin, you should give it up. You do not have to suffer to repair your acne scars, and irritation is a sign you’re headed in the wrong direction.

Also, remember to give whatever plan you try at least one month to see tangible effects. Your skin will have to adjust to your new product, and the scarring will take time to lessen and lighten.

Patience is key with plant medicine. Pay close attention to your body and what it is telling you about any plant you introduce. It will rarely lead you astray.
