What Is a Blowout and Where Should I Get One? The Pros and Cons of an At-Home Blowout

3 mins

Shanna Mendez

Women around the world rave over blowouts, but many women are still wondering “what is a blowout?”, and whether they can do it themselves. Let’s find out!

So? What is a blowout?

The long and short of it is this: wash, condition, treat, blow-dry, and style. Simple, right? Not so fast.

I am a no-muss, no-fuss write-from-home mom, and I have no time, and no budget, to head to the salon for regular blowouts. Do not get me wrong; I love a good blowout after a haircut. For me, that means every 4 to 6 months.

I use top-quality shampoo, conditioner, and other hair products, but I do not dedicate hours to fabulous hairstyles. I do, however, have three sisters, four girl cousins, five aunts, and two grandmothers, and many of them are the classic beauty queen go-all-out for fashion women.

I have one sister who spends more money on beauty products and salon styling than anything else in her budget, including food! All this family history to say I have learned from some of the best that your blowout does not have to be in a salon, you can do it yourself, and you can do a fantastic job in a brief time. For this homeschooling, working from home mama that is a win-win.

What Is a Blowout?

As quickly referenced above, a blowout is what happens when you wash and blow-dry your hair, styling it to be bouncy and shiny. Women love to have it, and men love to see their women with a blowout because it feels indulgent and classy. No one laments a blowout.

Here are the steps to your DIY:

1. Wash and Condition hair with high-quality products

You want to make sure your hair is well cared for before applying that much artificial heat to it, which could be damaging if you are not careful.

2. Apply a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz product to damp hair

This step ensures you have extra protection, and your hair turns out shiny and bouncy.

3. Blow dry hair using a hairdryer with a diffuser nozzle and a big round brush

This part of the process is the longest. It requires you to have patience as you target your hair with a diffuser as you brush your hair from the underside, working from your scalp outward. Aim the diffuser at the section of the hair on the brush, guiding the dryer and the brush along together.

4. Straighten/Curl hair with a flat iron (Optional)

If you have frizzy hair at all, you will need to apply the flat iron to pull out any hint of frizz or curl. To get the bounce effect, curl the flat iron in a combination of upward and downward strokes to get a mix of curly end effects. Apply small sections of hair at a time for an all-over volume and bounce effect that lasts longer.

5. Apply setting spray or hairspray

You’ll want a light spray that will not weigh your light, bouncy hair down. Apply to your whole head from a distance, holding the can several inches from hair when you spray.

Pros and Cons of DIY Blowout

Look, you should only be washing your hair every few days, and certainly not every day. In the end, a DIY blowout could be a wonderful act of self-care that you enjoy performing a couple of times a week.

Watch a few YouTube tutorials and practice, and in no time, you will find yourself a pro on precisely what kind of style works for you. The pros to DIY blowouts heavily outweigh the cons.

You get to practice in the privacy of your own home, with your arsenal of trusted products, and you get to save a ton of money.

The average blowout costs $45. That is a ton of money, not to mention the time spent going to the salon and sitting for the stylist. Treat yourself to the salon a couple of times a year, and the rest of the time, do it yourself. Statistically, women between the ages of 25 and 34 represent less than 20% of the hair salon market.

Why? Because younger people know they can figure it out themselves!

The only con I can think of to DIY blowouts is losing out on the luxury of having someone else pamper you while you drink wine and nibble on cookies. You can have the best of both worlds, though, as I said above.

Pamper yourself at the salon within your budget and pay close attention to what your stylist does when you are in the chair to pick up tips.

See? Win-win.

Remember, you can preserve your blowout for several days after the salon or DIY by wrapping your hair before bed in light cloth, as our grandmothers did.

Care for Your Blowout

A blowout is a terrific way to feel well cared for, and you can get this feeling in the comfort of your bathroom. As someone who has experimented with all types of styles, dyes, and products, I can say the most important thing to consider when playing with your hair is which products you are applying.

Go for all-natural, vitamin and mineral-rich shampoos, conditioners, and treatments. That way, even the craziest hair experiments and frequent blowouts will not damage your nutrient-rich, well-loved locks.
